Taizhou academician Li Deren wins national sci-tech award

The 2023 National Highest Science and Technology Award was announced in Beijing on June 24, with academician Li Deren receiving the preeminent honor.

Li – from the Jiangyan district of Taizhou city, located in East China's Jiangsu province – is an esteemed academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

He also serves as a professor at the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing at Wuhan University.

Celebrated for his groundbreaking work in photogrammetry and remote sensing, Li has been instrumental in advancing China's geospatial observation capabilities.

He has overcome significant technical challenges in global high-precision positioning and mapping using satellite remote sensing, addressed a series of high-precision processing issues for remote sensing satellite images and led the development of fully automated high-precision aerial and ground surveying systems.

His pioneering contributions are widely said to have been crucial in establishing China's high-resolution earth observation system – or CHEOS.
