The grand finale of the Meixiang Xiyun Opera Contest concluded on June 1 in Hailing district of Taizhou city – in East China's Jiangsu province – with the participation of 17 finalists.
The event took place at the Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall, a commemorative building in Taizhou, the hometown of Peking Opera maestro Mei Lanfang (1894-1961).
Chen Xuhui, apprentice of Peking Opera master Mei Baojiu (1934-2016) and son of Mei Lanfang, said that the vibe during the contest was great, underscoring the broad appeal of opera.
He urged the new generation of young people to carry forward the culture of traditional Chinese opera and pass on its musical treasures.
Taking the opportunity presented by the 130th anniversary of the birth of Mei Lanfang, the contest sought to enrich the aesthetic and cultural lives of locals and offer a platform for opera enthusiasts to showcase their talent and exchange know-how.
In honor of the Peking Opera maestro, Hailing district – as the main urban area of Taizhou – will hold a series of 10 themed activities throughout this year, including a Beijing Opera troupe tour and a literary and art-themed happening.
After the judging and results, the award ceremony gets underway. [Photo/WeChat account: weihailing0523]
