The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism recently announced the list of creative spaces for intangible cultural heritage or ICH in the region, with the Jiangsu Shize Art Creative Space, located in the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone in Taizhou city, East China's Jiangsu province, included.

It was the only space in the city to make it onto the list, in a real breakthrough for Taizhou's creative ICH spaces.

One representative ICH item in the space is wood carving. Shuai Chunyan, fifth generation inheritor of Shize woodcarving, has met with considerable success.

He has successively won honorary titles including Chinese Traditional Master of Arts and Crafts and National First Class Master of Arts and Crafts.

Taizhou wood carving, with a recorded history dating back to the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907), mainly focuses on architectural decoration wood carving and Buddhist wood carving.

During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the artistic style gradually matured, with a simple yet refined style.
