In February 2005, the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government decided to set up "a medical industry park and a Chinese medical city" in Taizhou city – located in East China's Jiangsu province – after thorough research.
As a result, in November 2006 construction started on the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone.
In March 2009, it was upgraded to a national-level high-tech zone, becoming the only medical high-tech zone in the country at the time.
Health, high-end equipment manufacturing, electronic information and new chemical materials are the four dominant industries in the zone. In particular, by the end of 2023, the scale of the zone's health industry topped 120 billion yuan ($16.86 billion), accounting for over 40 percent of Taizhou's total.
In 2023, the zone's GDP hit 120 billion yuan, an increase of about 6.5 percent. Its general public budget revenue last year was 10.32 billion yuan, a rise of 2 percent and fixed asset investment grew by more than 6 percent.
Moving forwards, plans are for the zone to accelerate its establishment as an industry highland by continuing to attract health businesses.
