Several cargo ships were simultaneously being unloaded on May 11 at a berth being operated by Yong'an Port Co Ltd – located in Taizhou, in East China's Jiangsu province – as the prefecture-level city on the banks of the Yangtze River continues to expand its container-handling capacity.

Boasting a 705-meter long Yangztze shoreline and favorable logistics  conditions, the company helps grain and oil enterprises transport inbound raw materials and outbound products. The cargo handled by that berth alone in 2022 reached 12 million metric tons.

Since June 2022, Yong'an Port Co has renovated its deep-water berths and constructed two new berths to expand its cargo-handling capacity.

Currently, part of a new 70,000-ton bulk cargo terminal and a belt conveyor has been put into use, with more berths and warehouses currently are under construction.

"On completion, the project will be the largest dedicated terminal for grain and oil transportation along the Yangtze River, helping raise its shoreline throughout to 26,000 tons per meter from 17,000 tons per meter, far beyond the province's average," said Zeng Jian, general manager of the company.

The ports in Taizhou handled 364 million tons of cargoes last year, ranking the city second in the province and 11th nationwide. Moreover, the city has 156 productive berths with an annual throughput of 170 million tons, ranking it third in Jiangsu.

In addition to improvement projects, the city has also removed 19 illegal projects and unlicensed terminals to improve the intensive use of its shoreline resources.
