Farmers in the county-level city of Xinghua – administered by the prefecture-level city of Taizhou in East China's Jiangsu province – are frantic right now with a series of bumper harvests, in the runup to the looming Spring Festival.

Right now, fishermen are really busy casting and hauling in their nets at Wugong Lake and at Dazong Lake. Yang Yong, head of the fishing team at Wugong Lake, said that more than 35,000 kilograms of fish were estimated to have been caught, with the big ones weighing in at 10-15 kg.

In the western waters of Wugong Lake, visitors can get a look at the skills involved in traditional fishing. One fisherman, surnamed Zhu, said his average daily income can reach more than 200 yuan ($30).

What's more, as the Spring Festival draws near, lotus root picking gets busy in Guanhe village in Shagou town. Every day, more than 10,000 kg of lotus roots come onto the market and the net income from them tops 6,000 yuan per mu (400.2 yuan per hectare) because of the high demand and prices during the festival.
