Overview of Binhu district

Binhu district in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, which lies next to Taihu Lake, is a Chinese water town in Jiangnan, the region south of the Yangtze River.

The district covers 572 square kilometers, of which 365 sq m is occupied by water, and had a population of 595,000 in 2021.

Since its establishment in 2001, Binhu district has witnessed tremendous changes in its social and economic sectors. 

Binhu district boasts the most tourism resources in Wuxi as well as the most provincial scientific institutes in the city. The GDP of Binhu district is expected to reach $15.55 billion in 2022, up 5% YOY. The district's imports and exports are expected to total $3.72 billion while the actual utilization of foreign capital is estimated to amount to $540 million for 2022. 

Binhu district added 156 municipal-level unicorn and innovative enterprises as well as brought in 1,200 tech enterprises and 13,000 university graduates in 2022. Its investment in R&D accounted for 3.83% of its GDP that year.

Binhu district also renovated 2.52 million sqm of old residential communities, established 15 public parks and nearly 1,100 parking spaces, and upgraded 33 public restrooms to create a more comfortable, convenient living environment for the people.

Binhu implemented 58 projects to beautify its rivers and lakes, planted 13.6 hectares of forests and built 350,000-sq-m public green spaces in urban areas in 2022. The district also had the lowest average PM2.5 level in Wuxi.

In 2022, Binhu created 17,000 new jobs for its urban residents, distributed $3.84 million worth of subsidies, and built several new schools and hospitals to improve living environment. The ratio of nursing facility beds in Binhu was 51 per 1,000 elderly people.

The district is home to three scenic spots with a 5A rating -- the highest in China's tourism attraction rating system. They are CCTV Wuxi Movie and TV Production Base, Lingshan Mountain scenic area and Yuantouzhu scenic area.

It also has five 4A scenic areas, including Plum Garden, Liyuan Park, Wuxi Zoo, Wuxi Studios and Helv Relics Museum, four 3A-level scenic spots and four national demonstration sites for rural tourism.

According to the local government, the district receives tens of millions of visits every year because of its impressive natural resources and man-made attractions.

The district has jurisdiction over Hudai town and the six sub-districts of Mashan, Xuelang, Liyuan, Helie, Rongxiang, and Lihu. Located within the district are a national tourist resort, a national industrial design park, a national digital film industrial park and two provincial development zones.
