Opened in 2023, Shanghai MedValley in Jiading district now hosts more than 140 companies and 11 research institutes and laboratory platforms, according to its operator. More than 500 doctors, researchers, engineers, and university faculty and students work at the park, near Ruijin Hospital's Jiading campus.
The park connects companies with clinical resources to help translate technologies from laboratories into medical use. Products from resident companies include Surgerii's single-port surgical robot and noninvasive blood glucose monitors.
Shanghai Atlas Biotechnology is working to make CAR-T cell therapy, which uses a patient's immune cells to fight cancer, more affordable. Chairman Wu Chongning said its self-developed cell-preparation platform can reduce preparation costs by up to 90 percent compared with conventional methods.
He said cooperation with Ruijin Hospital helped the company identify clinical needs and move several technologies through hospital ethics review.
A medical information technology institute established by the Yangtze River Delta National Technology Innovation Center has developed more than 20 products across brain-computer interfaces, medical AI, and digital therapeutics. Its AI sleep-monitoring system can generate a report as soon as a patient wakes.
The park also provides tailored support for regulatory processes and clinical collaboration. Since opening, it has hosted 1,281 exchange events, drawing about 18,000 participants. By the first half of 2026, resident companies held 37 Class II and Class III medical device registration certificates, with eight additional projects in joint applications.
The park's occupancy rate is nearly 80 percent. Jiading's 2027 development plan aims to secure more than 100 domestic medical device registrations and over 30 overseas approvals, strengthening the district's high-end medical device industry.
