Automotive safety supplier Autoliv, with its China headquarters in Shanghai's Jiading district, has introduced the world's first foldable steering wheel in partnership with Silicon Valley's autonomous vehicle innovator Tensor.
This innovative product was showcased at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2026) in Las Vegas and is set to enter mass production later this year.
The steering wheel is designed for autonomous driving and offers both manual and automatic modes. In Level 4 autonomous mode, it retracts into the dashboard, freeing up space and enhancing passenger comfort and cabin flexibility. When manual control is needed, it extends back into a full steering wheel.
Safety features include an adaptive airbag system. When retracted, a dashboard airbag is activated; in manual mode, the steering wheel's built-in airbag ensures safety.
This new steering wheel will first appear in Tensor's Robocar models, with production starting later this year. These vehicles will be available in the United States, Europe, and Middle East markets.
"We aim to enhance safety and comfort by making our systems smarter and more adaptable," said Fabien Dumont, chief technology officer for Autoliv. "This foldable steering wheel seamlessly adapts to different driving needs."
This groundbreaking technology represents a major step forward in autonomous vehicles, promising to transform driving experiences by combining innovation with safety and comfort.
