Brendan, an American expat, found more than a new home in Nanxiang Ancient Town — he discovered a community eager to engage in more cultural exchange. Through an English corner he started, Brendan has become a familiar face, connecting locals and fostering friendships.

Formerly busy studying business management in Los Angeles, Brendan changed course in 2021 in a bid to explore cultural exchange on a global level. After learning Spanish in Latin America, he focused on Mandarin, choosing Nanxiang for his fresh start.

Brendan quickly embraced Nanxiang's cultural vibe. A visit to Manmao Cafe led to a friendship with the manager, Yiyi, who quickly accommodated his vegan diet. Their language exchange inspired others to join, forming a small group.

Facing closure, the cafe found a new lease of life when Brendan suggested an English corner to attract visitors. Elian, a group member, promoted it online, and the response was quickly met with a rush of enthusiasm. Since October, residents and children have gathered there nightly, sometimes up to 20 people at a time, even after the cafe officially closed for business.

Brendan's English corner is now a cherished local event. Every weekend, he shares meeting details in a WeChat group, drawing adults and children eager to practice their English. The setting is informal, focusing on conversation about daily life and interests, making learning both enjoyable and effective.

Brendan encourages everyone to speak, never positioning himself as a "teacher". He praises the children's progress and the confidence they've gained. Adults, like Kitty, have also made strides, proving it's never too late to start.

During his stay, Brendan has embraced the community's warmth and generosity. Hotel staff help with daily challenges and join him in learning Mandarin. Participants often share local treats and Chinese-learning materials. "Nanxiang feels like home," Brendan said, valuing the deep connections he's made.

Brendan said he hopes to share more of China's culture and his Nanxiang experiences with friends back home, inviting them to discover this land's unique charm and warmth.
