Bianqiang village in Taibus Banner, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has been selected as a "FAO Demonstration Village" by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in recognition of its achievements in sustainable rural development, biodiversity conservation, and cultural heritage preservation.
The program is part of the FAO's 80th anniversary celebrations and was launched in Cairo, Egypt, on Dec 8, 2025.
Bianqiang has promoted the integrated development of agriculture, culture, and tourism in recent years while strengthening grassroots governance and improving living conditions. In 2025, the village's collective economy generated 1.1 million yuan ($160,000), while villagers' per capita disposable income reached 25,000 yuan.
To advance agricultural modernization, the village invested 45 million yuan in smart agricultural facilities equipped with intelligent temperature-control systems, automated irrigation, and smart lighting and ventilation technologies, improving both the yield and quality of agricultural products.
Relying on its modern agricultural base, Bianqiang has developed new tourism models that combine smart farming, sightseeing, fruit picking, and leisure activities. The village has introduced three leading agricultural enterprises and established seven farmers' cooperatives, building a characteristic industrial system centered on landscape seedlings, potatoes, and organic vegetables.
The village has also developed eco-tourism facilities, including forest and wetland parks, 26 homestays, and eight themed rural tourism routes. It now receives more than 50,000 visitors each year.
Bianqiang has strengthened rural governance through grid-based environmental management and public participation programs. Cultural revitalization efforts have also expanded, with investment in a center for exhibitions, performances, and intangible cultural heritage activities.
