North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region will develop a 35,000-kilometer "four horizontal and twelve vertical" integrated transport network, local transport authorities announced on March 25.

The initiative is designed to establish a comprehensive, multimodal system linking east to west and north to south, enhancing connectivity with Beijing, neighboring provinces, border regions, and maritime gateways while advancing urban-rural integration.

Aligning with China's national transport blueprint, the project will prioritize key corridors serving border access, the Yellow River economic belt, and major energy and resource routes. It also seeks to improve coordination and efficiency across different modes of transport.

The network will comprise around 13,000 km of railways and 22,500 km of expressways, alongside 21 civil airports.

Major hubs will include national-level comprehensive transport centers in Hohhot, Baotou, and Tongliao, regional hubs such as Ulaanqab and Chifeng, and key port hubs like Manzhouli and Ereenhot.

By 2030, all national-level corridors in the region are expected to be fully operational, with more than 90 percent of the backbone network – about 33,000 km – completed.

By the end of 2025, 85.3 percent of the core network had already been completed.
