China unveils first full-range wind power gearboxes in Gobi Deserts

China's first batch of full-range wind power gearboxes designed for barren Gobi Deserts, developed by CRRC Qishuyan Institute Co, has recently rolled off the production line in Baotou city, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, marking a major step forward in high-power wind equipment manufacturing.

The new gearbox series overcomes key challenges faced in harsh Gobi Desert environments, including strong winds, heavy sand, and extreme temperature fluctuations.

The products achieve breakthroughs in four core technologies – low-temperature sealing, anti-corrosion, dust prevention, and heat dissipation – while being compatible with Mingyang's 6–18 MW onshore wind turbines, supporting more efficient and reliable clean-energy projects.

CRRC's large-scale onshore ultra-high-power gearbox project, with an annual capacity of 800 units, began construction in February 2025 and entered operation on Sept 27.

Once fully operational, it is expected to generate an additional 1 billion yuan ($142.86 million) in output value and create over 300 jobs. As the largest large-megawatt wind gearbox manufacturing base in northern China, this project addresses a key gap in Inner Mongolia's capability for large-megawatt gearbox assembly, integration, and testing.
