The predecessor of the College of Chemistry and Environmental Science was the Biochemistry Department at Inner Mongolia Normal University (IMNU), which was established in 1952. In 2016, Inner Mongolia Engineering Research Center for Water-Saving Agriculture was merged into the college.
It offers three majors including Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Material Chemistry for undergraduate students. The Chemistry program is taught in Chinese and Mongolian. It also offers courses for postgraduate students.

There are 62 faculty members at the college, including 15 professors, two researchers, 16 associate professors, three advanced experimentalists, 14 instructors and three engineers. Among them, 28 are doctors, 17 are masters and 27 are master supervisors.
The college has a large number of advanced equipment including MRI machines, transmission electron microscopes, spectrometers and other traditional devices, with a total value of more than 27 million yuan ($4.1 million).
It has made great progress in construction of disciplines over the past 65 years. Its discipline of Materials Physics and Chemistry was selected as a major discipline in Inner Mongolia autonomous region and its major of Chemistry was chosen as a featured major in the region. The Chemistry Laboratory was listed as a regional demonstration center. And courses on Physical Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry for undergraduate students were chosen as featured courses in the region.
Its courses on Organic Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Chemical Engineering were listed as featured course in IMNU.
With three major laboratories, namely the Inner Mongolia Key Laboratory for Physics and Chemistry of Functional Materials, Inner Mongolia Key Laboratory of Green Catalysis and Inner Mongolia Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry, the college undertook 88 research projects, including 22 national projects, 66 provincial projects, with total funds of more than 22 million yuan ($3.34 million).
It published more than 266 papers in domestic and foreign journals and 14 monographs. Twenty projects of the college obtained the national invention patent.
Cultivation of high-end talents in chemistry and environmental science is the main target of the college. It has developed more than 8,000 talents for companies, and government departments in the region and even the country over the past 65 years.
