Hohhot honored as UN Biodiversity Charming City
Hohhot was selected for the new cohort of Biodiversity Charming Cities and joined the Cities With Nature platform at the 9th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities, an official parallel event to the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), which convened on Oct 24 in Yerevan, capital of Armenia.
This recognition commends cities and regions with outstanding achievements in biodiversity conservation and supports local governments in delivering the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Hohhot's forest coverage rate currently stands at 16.59 percent, and grassland coverage remains stable at about 50 percent. The green space ratio in built-up areas now reaches 41.13 percent, with over 17 square meters of park green space per capita – placing Hohhot among the leading provincial capitals nationwide.
Hohhot hosts abundant wild plant resources, with 755 wild plant species from 342 genera across 96 families. Nine wild plant species are under national Class-II key protection, and 45 vascular plant species are under key protection in Inner Mongolia.
The city is home to 347 terrestrial vertebrate species across 80 families and 29 orders. National Class-I protected fauna include three mammal species and seven bird species, along with 41 species of national Class-II protected wildlife. Rare and endangered animals have shown favorable local breeding performance and recovering populations.
