Hohhot cracks code for stable computing power supply
The China Mobile (Hohhot) Intelligent Computing Center consumed 850 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2025, with power bills totaling 290 million yuan ($43.14 million) to account for over 70 percent of total operating costs.
Demand for green computing power is growing. Last year, the center purchased 750 million kWh of green electricity through direct green power supply and medium-to-long-term agreements in the electricity market, with green power accounting for 88 percent of its consumption.
In the first half of 2026, electricity consumption by the computing power industry in the operating area of Inner Mongolia Power Group reached 4.8 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 79 percent.
Since the beginning of the year, Hohhot's peak electricity load has reached 4.88 million kW, with new energy output peaking at 2.04 million kW.
China Huadian Corporation is constructing the National Integrated Computing Power Network and the Horinger Data Center Cluster Green Energy Supply Demonstration Project, featuring 300,000 kW of wind power, and 60,000 kW of photovoltaic capacity.
On the new energy side, the project includes a 110-kilovolt step-up substation that collects and steps up power from wind and solar before delivering it via 110 kV lines to the Yadamu Substation. Two dedicated 110 kV lines form a green power supply channel for computing loads.
The first phase of the project can provide approximately 760 million kWh of green electricity annually, with the end-user electricity price controlled at around 0.36 yuan per kWh.
