Hohhot in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region is to launch electronic identity cards for dogs, according to the announcement made by the public security bureau of the capital city on June 28.
The announcement was made during a launch ceremony of the alliance center for rescuing stray dogs.
According to the announcement, owners can apply for electronic identity cards for dogs on the official website or at designated places.
The alliance center -- initiated by public welfare institutions, media organizations and public security authorities at the county-level in Hohhot -- aims to better manage the dog population of the city.
Plans to organize dog adoptions and dog rescues have also been rolled out, to encourage more participation in improving the management of pets.
In December last year, the municipal government established isolation areas and shelters for stray dogs. More than 6,000 stray dogs have been moved to the shelters and have had their identity cards entered online over the past year.
