Household waste sorting promoted in Hohhot
Hohhot in Inner Mongolia autonomous region has established household waste sorting facilities in 92 local communities spread out across the region's capital, local authorities announced recently.
Over the last few years, the local government has prioritized waste sorting in the city, officials said.
Liyuan residential community was the first pilot to promote waste sorting in Hohhot. In 2017, the community established waste sorting stations and brought in two waste treatment companies to deal with the household refuse in the community.
The treatment companies replaced regular garbage cans with intelligent ones. With technologies including big data and the internet of things, household waste in the community is now collected and treated in an environmentally-friendly way.
According to the local government, Hohhot was the only city in Inner Mongolia among the first batch of 46 cities to promote the national waste sorting campaign.
Hohhot aims to achieve a recycling rate of 35 percent by the end of 2020.
Li Yang, a worker at the environmental department of Saihan district, said that the local government organized regular promotions at residential communities to popularize household waste sorting and improve locals' awareness of the process.
Local officials said that Hohhot will draw up regulations on waste sorting, and the actions by public institutions towards sorting waste in the city will be put under supervision.
