Eight treasures in one Hechi dish
Huaiyuan in Yizhou city, Hechi, is one of the four major ancient towns in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
Its long history, dating back more than 1,300 years, has bestowed Huaiyuan with unique traditions, cuisine, and culture.
Babao rice, literally translated as eight treasure rice, is one of the most commonly consumed local dishes in Huaiyuan during Spring Festival, and has also proved popular with visitors.

Made using the eight major ingredients of dates, wolfberries, roast pork, candied melon, lotus seeds, Chinese olives and melon seeds, the rice is nourishing and sweet.
The symbolic meaning of eight treasure rice is that it embodies prayers for happiness and a good harvest during the coming year.

One of the most famous interpretations of the classic dish is made by Wei Xiuxin, 55, whose innovative twist on the traditional recipe has drawn praise and popularity among locals. Wei combines all of the ingredients, creating intricate designs and patterns, making the dish not only delicious but also beautiful to behold.
