Wintry weather to blast through Hechi
The meteorological bureau of Hechi in Guangxi has warned local residents and governmental departments to make full preparations for the freezing weather on the way in coming days.
The bureau initiated its third-level emergency response of severe meteorological disaster (sleet, frost and cold wave) at 15:30 on Jan 20. Influenced by severe cold air, the temperature is set to drop by about 7 C to 9 C around the city from Jan 22 to 25.
It is expected that Hechi could see some of the lowest temperatures in the area's history. The minimum temperature in the north and hilly areas will reach -4 C and the middle and south parts will be slightly above 0 C.
The temperature will rise again gradually on Jan 26-29, as air comes in from the south.
According to the latest meteorological data, the freezing, snowy weather could be as severe as that seen in 2008. The chilly weather will last about five days. Guizhou province and counties of Nandan, Tian'e, Huanjiang and Luocheng in Hechi will experience freezing rain or sleet from Jan 21 to 23. Roads will become icy in the north and alpine regions in the south on Jan 24 and 25, so drivers are urged to take care. The weather could lead to severe damage to agriculture, forestry, aquaculture and animal husbandry.
A staff member of Hechi meteorological bureau reminded that transportation, electric power and communication facility maintenance departments should take precautions as the Spring Festival travel rush begins.
Those working outside and in highly exposed areas, such as billboards or temporary buildings, should take extra care as wind speeds pick up and gale damage could occur.
