King of Huanjiang red pomelo weighs 5.3kg

The first Guangxi Huanjiang Red Pomelo Festival started in the Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county in Hechi on Oct 17.

The most interesting and entertaining activity on the opening day of the festival was the selection of the king of Huanjiang red pomelo. A total of 10 red pomelos selected by local orchards were judged by the jury.

After weighing and appraisal, the 5.3 kg red pomelo planted by a fruit grower named Luo Wei from Da'an village in Huanjiang county won the title. After the competition, Luo peeled off the skin of the king pomelo and shared it with people present.

Huanjiang has been striving to develop its characteristic fruits industry in recent years and has so far planted red pomelos in a 33,000 mu (2,200 hectares) area. It is projected that the planting area will reach 100,000 mu by 2020.

As one of the eight poverty alleviation industries in Huanjiang, the red pomelo industry contributes to the local economy and residents' prosperity.

The festival will help promote the local tourism and the popularity of Huanjiang red pomelo.
