Fengshan holds first walnut festival

Fengshan county in Hechi, Guangxi, held the first walnut festival from Sept 1 to 10, the local media reported.

Visitors from places such as Nanning, Baise, Tianyang and Pingguo experienced walnut picking, de-greening and baking at Nongzhe village in Fengshan county.

The festival also held various activities such as photography competition, scientific research, art performance and eating competition.

The festival is aimed at raising the popularity of Fengshan walnut, promoting Fengshan's economic structural adjustment and facilitating the local economic and social development.

Fengshan county locates in the west part of Hechi and has a total area of 1,738 square kilometers. It started to develop walnut industry in 2001, which also helped farmers in mountainous areas increase income. Currently, its walnut planting area has reached 330,000 mu (22,000 hectares), benefiting 32,000 farmer households in 98 administrative villages.

Fengshan county produced 40,000 mu walnut in 2014, with an output of 500 tons worth more than 18 million yuan ($2.83 million).
