Kaiyang's green initiatives yield big results

In recent years, Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been working to advance the construction of ecological civilization and promote green development by strengthening governance and supervision, improving the environment, and enhancing the green transformation of industries.

Kaiyang has established the first county-level forest chief system service center in Guiyang, with 1,296 forest rangers appointed, to hold the forest chiefs at the county, township and village levels accountable for 1.52 million mu (101,333 hectares) of forested land in the county. The forest area of Kaiyang currently sits at 100,440 hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 57.25 percent.

Furthermore, Kaiyang is working to strengthen its development model by integrating enterprises with forest farms, bases and farms, and to encourage and support under-forest economic projects such as under-forest planting, under-forest aquaculture, and forest landscape utilization. This effort has produced more than 1,000 jobs in rural areas, with a per capita annual income of over 40,000 yuan ($5,524).

Meanwhile, the county also strives to promote the high-end, intelligent, and green development of its manufacturing industry and continuously promote energy conservation and carbon reduction in key areas. Efforts are also being made to minimize the adverse impact of waste on the environment by reducing, reusing and defusing the waste.
