Kaiyang holds tree planting activity to improve environment

Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, organized an activity in which government officials and ordinary people planted trees on Feb 7, the first workday after the Spring Festival holiday.

The activity was participated in by Wang Qiyun, Party secretary of Kaiyang county; Li Biyong, director of the standing committee of the Kaiyang people's congress, and more.

That day, around 1,380 people from Kaiyang's 18 townships, towns and sub-districts volunteered to plant 38,500 trees, with a total planting area of 350 mu (23.33 hectares).

In recent years, Kaiyang county has been adhering to the concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" and pursuing environmental protection and green development.

The county has promoted things like closing mountains for afforestation, returning farmland to forest, and building "green communities and units".

So far, the county has completed 94,100 mu of afforestation, with a forest coverage rate of 59.48 percent, more than any other place in central Guizhou. 

It has also successively won the honorary titles of "China's Green Development Excellent City" and "China's Ecological Charm County".
