The number of people covered by basic medical insurance in Kaiyang county – administered by Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province – has now reportedly hit 379,717, accounting for more than 95 percent of the county's total population.

The achievement has widely been pronounced a major result in helping lift residents out of poverty.

Under the county's work plan, all its poverty-stricken people, those lifted out of poverty, elderly people from low-income families, minors, critically ill people and orphans will be included in the basic medical insurance system.

Of these, people who leave poverty, the elderly in low-income families, minors and patients with serious illnesses will receive subsidies for participation in medical insurance costs.

People registered for subsistence allowances, extremely poverty-stricken people, orphans and severely disabled persons who are lifted out of poverty will be fully subsidized.
