Phosphogypsum utilization project put into operation in Kaiyang

The first phase of a 200,000-metric-ton phosphogypsum comprehensive utilization project was put into operation in Kaiyang county of Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, on June 1.

The project is of Lijun Gypsum Powder Building Materials Co Ltd in the county's economic development zone, and the project's main product, construction gypsum powder, will be sold to Chongqing municipality, Sichuan province, and other places.

It is expected to bring an output value of 18 million yuan ($2.82 million) each year.

In recent years, the phosphorous chemical industry has gradually developed into the pillar industry of Kaiyang, while the comprehensive utilization of phosphogypsum has become a restriction for the industry -- due to the fact that every ton of phosphoric acid produced will by-produce about 4 tons of phosphogypsum.

In June 2020, the county introduced the project from Lijun Gypsum Powder Building Materials, which will handle comprehensive utilization of 600,000 tons of phosphogypsum annually.

Located in Dashui village of Jinzhong town and with investment of around 50 million yuan, the project's first phase with 200,000 tons handling capacity was put into use, and the second phase with 400,000 tons handling capacity is progressing well.

Following full operation, the project is expected to realize an annual output value of 40 million yuan, and pay 2.52 million yuan in tax.
