Kaiyang hosts selenium-enriched loquat festival

The Kaiyang selenium-enriched loquat festival was held in Kaiyang county of Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, from May 17 to 23.

Aiming to advocate scientific selenium supplementation, promote selenium-enriched loquat and selenium-enriched agricultural products in Kaiyang, and drive tourism sector, the seven-day event included a food culture carnival, a loquat exhibition and promotion event, and a selenium supplementation knowledge contest.

During the opening ceremony on May 17, which was attended by more than 5,000 people, six individuals in Kaiyang county were awarded for selenium promotion, and 25,000 kilograms of loquat were sold.

Kaiyang county now plants 83,000 mu (5,533.33 hectares) of loquat, with total output value of more than 100 million yuan ($15.54 million). The county is the most concentrated loquat commodity base in Guiyang city and even in Guizhou province.

Kaiyang selenium-enriched loquat has enjoyed high reputation in the country, boasting titles such as the "national geographical indication protected product" and one of "China's top 10 selenium-enriched brands".
