Kaiyang county in Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, held an activity in its Yunkai Square to mark the International Day for Disaster Reduction, which falls on Oct 13 each year.

The theme of this year's International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was "improving disaster risk management ability."

The Kaiyang activity focused on ensuring disaster-affected people's basic livelihoods, improving rural disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities, enhancing rural residents' emergency knowledge and establishing acceptable practices and models for disaster prevention and mitigation.

The member units of Kaiyang county's disaster reduction committee combined their experience involving earthquakes, geology, thunder, lightning and forest fires to introduce disaster prevention and reduction knowledge in the form of promotional books, manuals, leaflets and posters.

During the publicity activities, Kaiyang county also made full use of TV, WeChat and other methods to publicize science knowledge related to disaster preparation.

More than 10,000 copies of disaster prevention and reduction books were distributed, and the activity's organizers received feedback from more than 500 residents.
