Updated: 2019-12-19

Southwestern China's Kaiyang county has entered its harvest season for kiwi fruit, according to local producers.

The kiwi fruit plantation park has reaped a good harvest in Wenquan village in Chengguan township in Kaiyang, they said.

The kiwi fruit was originally planted in 2014, covering a total area of over 34 hectares in three groups in Wenquan village -- including Jieshan, Longyuan and Nanmulin.

Pan Qibiao, in charge of the plantation, said that the park owns a self-made cold storage unit to refrigerate the harvest, which can be preserved for 3 to 5 months.

"This year is a bumper harvest thanks to plenty of rainfall, the size of the kiwi fruit is big and some of the big ones can weigh as much as 100 grams," Pan said.

Pan said that there are two categories of kiwi fruit, one with a red core and the other with a yellow core. "However, both of them are rich in vitamin C," he added.

The park has also provided job positions for local residents, helping them increasing incomes and improving their standard of living.

A total of more than 20 people work in the park now. In addition, local residents can invest their lands in the kiwi fruit plantation and they can get a profit of 20 percent from the total yield.

Yin Xuebing, a local resident from Wenquan village, worked in the park together with his wife.

"I earn 100 yuan ($14.30) every day in the park since I found a job here last October," Yin said.

In August 2019, the kiwi fruit acquired a national green food certificate.

Locals say that Kaiyang is suitable to grow kiwi fruit because of its humid climate, abundant sunlight and the rich soil.
