Construction of permanent venue for Greater Bay Area Science Forum starts in Nansha, Guangzhou

The construction of a permanent venue for the Greater Bay Area Science Forum started on Sept 24 in Nansha district, Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong province.

Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Bai Chunli, first chairman of the Alliance of International Science Organizations, and Guo Yonghang, mayor of Guangzhou, delivered speeches at the event. Wang Xi, vice-governor of Guangdong, attended the event.

The permanent venue is located on the eastern side of the central business district of Lingshan Island, Mingzhu Bay, Nansha, with a planned land area of about 100,000 square meters. The complex consists of multiple facilities such as a conference center, a science and technology museum, a sci-tech innovation center and apartment buildings.

The venue will serve as the site for forum activities and can also be used for office, conferences, exhibitions and exchanges, business services and art exhibitions.

Leung said the forum, as the highest-level scientific event in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, will contribute to international science and technology innovation and the development of emerging industries in the Greater Bay Area.

The forum will promote in-depth and frequent scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, help Nansha with high-quality "inviting in" and "going out", and promote long-term prosperity of Hong Kong.

Bai said the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of the regions with the highest degree of openness, the strongest economic vitality, innovation and development in China. 

"We must seize the opportunity to develop the Greater Bay Area Science Forum into a high-level exchange platform for scientists, scientific organizations and all sectors of society to exchange views on global scientific development and cooperation through collaboration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," Bai added.

Guangzhou will ensure the construction is completed on time at a high level of quality, said Mayor Guo.

A strategic advisory committee for the forum was also established on the same day. As the decision-making and advisory body of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum, it has 23 members, including academicians and leading experts in disciplines such as energy science, particle science, material physics and molecular biology.
