The Color Extravaganza of Dunhuang, an artistic performance, as part of the 3rd Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo held in September 2018, showcased stunning recreations & modern interpretations of Mogao-inspired costumes, blending heritage with innovation.
The design framework was based on four color palettes—green-blue, earthy red, ochre yellow, and dark brown—each corresponding to four thematic series: Nine-Colored Deer, Flying Apsaras, Silk Road, and Transformation.

The "Recreation of Dunhuang Costume Art" segment featured twenty representations of secular donor portraits from various dynastic murals in the Dunhuang caves.
Through historical document analysis and comparative studies of textile artifacts, a team led by designers Chu Yan and Cui Yan meticulously recreated the artistic essence and unique charm of Dunhuang attire, faithfully restoring the silhouettes, patterns, and colors of historical garments.
Staff members from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Dunhuang Academy, The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts (UK), and the Dunhuang Culture Promotion Foundation, were responsible for designing and producing the costumes for the event.
