[1st Expo Review] Symphonic choir 'Dream of Dunhuang' shines at inaugural Dunhuang cultural expo
The large-scale symphonic choir performance Dream of Dunhuang, a landmark production from Gansu province, took the spotlight at the Gansu Grand Theatre on Sept 21 and 22, 2016.
As a centerpiece of the inaugural Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo, the performance mesmerized audiences with its profound artistic depth.
Developed over four years, the production draws inspiration from the "Greater Dunhuang" cultural concept and is composed of 13 movements across three thematic sections: The Silk Road, Dreaming in Dance, and Pilgrimage.
The Silk Road illuminates the historical contributions of the ancient trade route to humanity and highlights Dunhuang's pivotal role. Dreaming in Dance showcases Dunhuang's rich cultural legacy through dance, painting, and calligraphy. Pilgrimage celebrates Dunhuang as a global cultural treasure, a symbol of peace and friendship, and a testament to openness and cultural exchange throughout history.
The production brought together a distinguished creative team, featuring renowned composer Wang Shiguang as music director, Xu Zhijun from the China National Opera House as conductor, Peng Deming, president of the Gansu Opera House, as director, national-level composer Zheng Bing, and local lyricist Wang Bin.
After its acclaimed premiere in January 2016 at the Gansu Grand Theatre, Dream of Dunhuang embarked on a regional tour in April, with performances in cities including Lanzhou, Jiayuguan, and Jinchang. Ahead of the Dunhuang cultural expo, the production underwent significant international adaptation and refinement.
This enhanced rendition seamlessly integrated traditional and modern art forms, incorporating contributions from renowned Chinese sand artists and 3D animation designers. The innovative collaboration offered audiences an immersive visual experience, enriching the narrative depth of this compelling performance.
