Autumn has arrived in Lanzhou, and with cooler weather comes a season of hearty local food.
Lamb and beef star this season, with a bowl of lamb noodle soup — made with rich bone broth, handmade noodles, tender lamb, and fresh vegetables — a popular choice for warming up on a chilly day.
Another local favorite is milk with egg and fermented glutinous rice, a sweet snack often found at night markets. Made with soft fermented rice, peanuts, and raisins, it is both warming and satisfying.
A traditional Lanzhou warm pot is also a must-try in autumn. Unlike spicy hotpot, this dish uses a copper pot with bone broth and layers of cabbage, vermicelli, seaweed, meatballs, and crispy pork, all simmered to bring out the ingredients' natural flavors.
Lanzhou's autumn offers plenty of simple, comforting food, from lamb and beef dishes to noodles and street snacks. A stroll through the city's streets is a good way to enjoy the season's flavors.
