A group of students from the Institute of Technical Education College West in Singapore visited the Jinhua Paper Cutting Museum in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, on Sept 21.
Led by teacher Zhou Guanzhi, who has been captivated by the art of paper cutting since his first visit in 2014, the students were introduced to the preservation and innovative development of Jinhua paper cutting by the museum's curator, Zhan Dongming.
They learned about the composition methods, tools, and creative processes involved in paper cutting, creating beautiful patterns under Zhan's guidance.
A total of 36 Singaporean students, predominantly Chinese Singaporeans, participated in the activity. "When I was a child, my grandmother taught me to make window paper-cutting works, but this is the first time I've really learned about it as an art form," said student Lin Zeming.
The activity, part of an exchange program between the Singaporean institute and Jinhua Technician College, not only involved classroom learning but also immersed students in the city's cultural landscape and culinary delights, providing a holistic understanding of Jinhua's charm.
Zhan, an inheritor of Jinhua Paper Cutting — an intangible cultural heritage item, emphasized the importance of continuing the legacy of paper cutting. The museum aims to further this mission by developing study programs and introducing modern paper-cutting products like bookmarks and calendars.
