Residents of Pujiang county in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, are currently busy crafting horse-shaped lanterns in preparation for the upcoming Spring Festival, which falls on Feb 10 this year.
The lanterns are constructed using woven bamboo frames, which are then adorned with colored rice paper cut into fur-like patterns in vibrant shades of red, white, yellow, and other colors. The paper is meticulously applied to cover the entire lantern surface.
In addition to the horse-shaped lanterns, locals also create an array of lanterns depicting auspicious animals such as tigers, kirins, and elephants.
The tradition of performing horse-shaped lantern dances has been cherished in Pujiang county for over 800 years. This unique cultural practice serves as a way to convey good wishes and offer prayers for a prosperous harvest and favorable weather in the coming year.
