Three scientists, including Yang Xueming, an alumnus of Zhejiang Normal University, were awarded the 2022 Future Science Prize, the first Chinese non-governmental science award jointly initiated by groups of scientists and entrepreneurs, on Aug 21.

Yang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, received the prize in physical sciences for developing new-generation molecular beam techniques with high resolution and sensitivity for state-resolved reaction dynamic studies, revealing quantum resonances and geometric phase effects in chemical reactions, according to the official website of the Future Science Prize.

Yang was born in Deqing county of Huzhou, Zhejiang province in 1962. At the age of 16, he was admitted to Zhejiang Normal University, where he was introduced to physics and began his journey into a larger academic world.

Yang now also acts as director of the Hangzhou Institute of Advanced Studies at Zhejiang Normal University. He often says that he grew up in the university.

Founded in 2016, the Future Science Prize aims to push forward research in basic science. It awards scientists who have made significant research achievements in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

This year, Li Wenhui, a professor at Tsinghua University, won the prize in life sciences, and Ngaiming Mok, a professor at the University of Hong Kong, won the prize in mathematics and computer science.
