Wuju Opera staged at intl event

Lou Sheng, a Wuju Opera actor, was invited to attend an online festival in celebration of the 2022 World Theatre Day on March 27.

As an annual event, World Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute. In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's World Theatre Day celebrations were all presented via short online programs.

During the online gala, emerging artists from a total of 37 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas showed off their youthful and energetic art work to art lovers around the world.

China is the vice-chairman country of the International Theatre Institute. As a representative young artist of Wuju Opera and winner of 30th Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award, Lou Sheng was asked to tell the history and show the charm of traditional Chinese opera and culture.

Wuju Opera is an ancient Chinese operatic form commonly known as Jinhua Opera. It is said to be a unique Chinese cultural treasure and was added to the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.

There are more than 500 traditional repertoires in Wuju Opera and its vocal music system is extensive. Wuju opera also has its own unique makeup, costumes and props.
