Zhejiang Yiwei Technology Co Ltd in Wuyi, a county-level city in Jinhua, East China's Zhejiang province, developed the first electric surfboard based on the similarities between surfing and snowboarding to help with snowboard training, local media reported on Jan 24.

Snowboard training requires a specific terrain and climate. This new invention allows national training teams to train in the absence of suitable conditions by taking advantage of the similarities between surfing and snowboarding in terms of actions and techniques.

"The development of the electric surfboard is a revolutionary scientific achievement," said Li Ruilin, director of the Water Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China.

The board's carbon-fiber body is powered by a 48V high-power lithium-ion battery and can reach speeds of more than 60 kilometers per hour. The speed can be regulated via a hand-held control system.

In the past, the power surfboards used in China used gasoline engines, while high-end products relied on imports, resulting in high costs, easy damage and complex maintenance. The electric surfboards are made with stronger materials, have a stronger power source, and are water and explosion-proof.

It has become the only designated board for national competitions such as the Asian Surfing Championship and E-Motosurf China Open.
