Intl productions to take center stage at Theatre Young

Theatre Young in Shanghai's Yangpu district has unveiled its 2026 autumn-winter season, featuring more than 30 productions and over 100 performances from September to February 2027. 

As a major attraction, the fourth Autumn IS International Theatre Season will present 37 performances across 11 productions, including 10 making their first Shanghai appearances, seven making Shanghai their only stop, and three selected for the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.

German productions are a major strand of the program. Schaubuhne Berlin returns with The Marriage of Maria Braun, directed by Thomas Ostermeier and adapted from Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film. Berliner Ensemble brings Sarah, directed by Oliver Reese and adapted from Scott McClanahan's semi-autobiographical novel.

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, meanwhile, inspires two distinct adaptations. Dusseldorfer Schauspielhaus presents the Asian premiere of Dorian, directed by Robert Wilson and starring Christian Friedel in the title role. Gob Squad presents Creation (Pictures for Dorian), using live video, moving frames, and improvisation.

In addition, Poland's Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Opole presents Authentic, directed by Norbert Rakowski. Singapore's Le Jeu Studio presents Alvin Chiam's solo work Last Luncheon, while France's Theatre de la Massue stages Le Petit Theatre du Bout du Monde.
