Choosing Shanghai: A high-speed engine of innovation

For Johnson & Johnson MedTech, choosing Shanghai means opting for a fast-moving engine of innovation.

In this episode, Edward Zhou, president of Johnson & Johnson MedTech China and senior vice-president of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, explains how the company has grown together with Shanghai over the past three decades. As a global leader in medical technology, Johnson & Johnson MedTech has placed its China headquarters in Shanghai and deeply participated in the city's innovation ecosystem.

Zhou says medical technology is ultimately a race against time, and Shanghai's business environment is helping companies run faster. Faster approvals, simpler procedures and smoother coordination between departments have created what he calls a valuable "time dividend."

One example is medical insurance coding approval, which used to take about 90 working days but can now be completed in around two weeks. For innovative products, flexible cross-regional and cross-level coordination has also made institutional innovation a real productive force.

Zhou describes Shanghai's service as pragmatic, efficient and execution-oriented. In Xuhui district, clear policies and continued support for multinational headquarters and medical innovation have strengthened Johnson & Johnson MedTech's long-term confidence in China. Looking ahead, the company will continue to combine global resources with local practice from Shanghai.
