Guarding 'migratory bird paradise' in bustling metropolis

At the mouth of the Yangtze River lies the Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve, a vast and pristine ecological haven right next to the megacity of Shanghai.

As a crucial stopover on the Asia-Pacific migratory flyway, Dongtan made history in 2024 by becoming Shanghai's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.

This milestone follows years of relentless conservation efforts. The wetlands, once severely threatened by invasive Spartina alterniflora (cordgrass), were rescued through a large-scale ecological restoration project launched in 2013.

Today, thanks to the daily dedication of wetland guardians, the sanctuary is home to 364 recorded bird species. By combining robust environmental protection with active public education, Shanghai is not just safeguarding this avian paradise, but also setting a remarkable example for building a sustainable, eco-friendly metropolis.
