Cycling event gears up Chongming's cultural and sports tourism

The 2026 Chongming cycling tour was held on April 19 in Shanghai, attracting over 2,000 cycling enthusiasts from around the world to the ecological haven of Chongming Island. This event seamlessly combined sports, culture, tourism and commerce into a vibrant celebration.

Starting at 8am from Xincheng Park, cyclists embarked on a journey through Chongming's stunning landscapes, including key ecological sites. Participants enjoyed breathtaking views of lakes, fields, forests, wetlands and flower seas, presenting the island's natural and cultural beauty.

This year's event featured the most diverse routes in its history. In addition to the 109 km half-course and 176 km full-course, a new 236 km super full-course was introduced, offering a complete island circuit for long-distance enthusiasts. The 25 km experience group and 60 km leisure group catered to beginners and families, embodying the spirit of "universal participation and individual enjoyment".

Beyond the race, cultural performances like drumming, classic Shanghai opera and local rap entertained participants and visitors, showcasing the island's rich cultural tapestry.

On the economic front, a bustling marketplace featured Chongming's iconic products, such as local white liquor and handmade crafts. The presence of three alpacas delighted attendees, enhancing the lively atmosphere. Mobile market stalls along the race route further integrated local products with the event, extending the economic impact island-wide.

Additionally, partnerships with dozens of local businesses offered exclusive discounts to participants, boosting revenue in hospitality, dining, and retail sectors. This strategic integration of sports, culture and commerce enriched the festival's offerings and highlighted Chongming Island's unique ecological appeal.
