The Tongji University International Student Community officially opened in Shanghai on March 22, welcoming its first cohort of more than 200 residents. It aims to strengthen social services for cultivating international talent and to support Shanghai's goal of becoming a global science and technology innovation hub.

Located in the core area of Wujiaochang in Yangpu district, the community spans 17,800 square meters. It comprises five dormitory buildings with 519 rooms and can house up to 759 international students, offering a modern, well-equipped living environment.

"This is not just a dormitory. It feels more like a home that allows me to focus on my studies with peace of mind," said Zheng Anyi, an international student from Canada.

For Ye Linlin, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the community's opening exemplifies an innovative model of collaboration among government, universities, and enterprises. Ye noted that it provides a new example of how social resources can be revitalized to better serve the education sector.

Zhou Haiying, head of Yangpu district, said the community will help attract outstanding young people from around the world to study, exchange ideas, innovate, and start businesses in Yangpu by offering a high-quality, comfortable, and secure living environment.

Zhou added that the project will further promote resource sharing and complementary strengths between the district and the university, enhancing Yangpu's openness and connectivity with the wider world.
