Fuwei village turns into hidden gem blending urban life with nature
The village of Fuwei in Zhongxing town, Chongming district, Shanghai is emerging as a beacon of ecological balance, blending urban life with nature in what is being termed as the "Shanghai-style Jiangnan".
This transformation promises a unique experience where city residents can reconnect with nature, observing the delicate balance between humans, birds, traditional farming and modern development.

Leading this transformation is Huang Jinhua, the village's Party secretary, who has witnessed Fuwei grow from isolation to openness. She attributes the change to infrastructure improvements around 2020 and the holistic reshaping driven by the "Shanghai-style Jiangnan" initiative. The project aims to attract visitors by developing amenities like cafes and restaurants, thereby boosting the local economy through tourism and hospitality.
A key feature of this initiative is the innovative "wetland rice fields" designed to serve as bird habitats. Spearheaded by Huang Yan, director of the environment institute at the Shanghai Dongda Architectural Design Group, these fields simulate a gradient from farmland to nature reserve, offering food for herbivorous birds.

Complementing the ecological design is a "digital nerve system" for monitoring bird activity. Wei Weixuan, a PhD student from Tongji University, utilizes advanced zoom cameras to track birds in wetlands, feeding data into a server for species identification.
Dong Nannan, associate professor in the landscape department at College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, emphasizes the importance of integrating digital technology throughout the project's entire lifecycle, from planning to post-implementation monitoring, to ensure ongoing ecological enhancements. This model of low-impact restoration and continuous evaluation sets a standard for future urban-nature integration projects.
