CRTG contributes to Peruvian economic and social development

Updated:2024-06-27

Since entering the Peruvian construction market in 2016, China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) has actively implemented the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aiming to enhance Peru's infrastructure. Up to now, CRTG has completed 3 projects and is currently executing 10 others, with a cumulative contract value of $590 million. It has gradually become one of the largest Chinese construction enterprises in Peru in terms of contract fulfillment and project completion rates.

CRTG is also committed to improving the lives of local people, actively fulfilling social responsibilities, contributing to the efforts of Chinese enterprises, and maintaining the strong friendship between China and Peru.

Lima Green Coast Project marks the entry into the Peruvian construction market

The Lima Green Coast Project undertaken by CRTG marks the first large-scale public engineering project completed and delivered by a Chinese company in Peru. It is a key project outlined in the Lima city government's 1995 plan and expanded in 2015, serving as part of the infrastructure for the Pan American Games. Combining "rapid transportation, tourism, leisure, and culture," the project included expressways, bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, parks, and beaches, contributing to one of Peru's coastal scenic routes.

The project was completed on January 25, 2020. It employed a highly localized organizational model, emphasizing "local employees, local procurement, local subcontracting, and local labor," leveraging local technical expertise and engaging local subcontractors and suppliers. At its peak, over 1,500 local workers were hired. By effectively integrating Chinese management advantages with local resources, the project garnered high praise from various sectors in Peru, expanding the market influence of Chinese enterprises in the country.

The 66 Highway Project in the Puno Region of Peru facilitates transportation of local agricultural products and boosts employment

CRTG has recently completed the construction of the 66 highway in the Puno region of Peru. The project, lasting nearly five years, is the first maintenance and construction project signed by CRTG in Peru after entering the market. Stretching over 296.2 kilometers, the highway traverses the high-altitude and barren regions of the Andes, with an average altitude of 4,500 meters.

The completion of the highway has brought new development opportunities to agriculture and animal husbandry along its route, enabling products such as alpacas, wool, and potatoes to reach the transportation hub of Juliaca in the Puno region more quickly, as well as presenting new possibilities for tourism development for the region. During the construction process, the project also generated over 3,000 employment opportunities for local residents, alleviating local employment pressures.

The Machu Picchu Highway Tunnel Project

Machu Picchu Highway Tunnel Project greatly supports local tourism industry

The highway tunnel project leading to the ancient Inca city ruins of Machu Picchu, built by CRTG, was completed on January 23, 2024. Raúl Pérez, Minister of Transport of Peru, emphasized that the Machu Picchu Highway Tunnel Project has significant influence on promoting economic development in the Cusco Province. Once completed, the tunnel will greatly improve the region's inadequate transportation conditions, providing much-needed convenience for a large number of tourists.

Situated in the mountainous region of the Cusco Province in southern Peru, the Machu Picchu Tunnel spans a total length of 1,987.5 meters. It is Peru's largest and longest bi-directional single-lane highway tunnel. The project lasted 944 days, being completed 23 days ahead of the schedule. The completion of the Machu Picchu Tunnel serves as an exemplary project for Sino-Peruvian cooperation under the BRI.

CRTG fulfills Chinese enterprises' social responsibility in Peru

Since March 2024, the city of Abancay in the Apurimac Province of Peru has been hit by severe rainstorms. The Tamburco area near the Abancay bypass road, constructed by CRTG, has faced significant risks including large slope collapses, mudslides, and damage to nearby residential buildings. In response to this disaster, CRTG Peru has dispatched professional personnel and specialized equipment to conduct emergency rescue operations, actively collaborating with the Civil Defense Department of Abancay City Government.

Additionally, CRTG Peru has provided assistance to over 50 students and teachers at the San Antonio Elementary School in the affected area, offering learning materials, nutritional supplies, and other essentials. This contribution has not only aided in immediate relief efforts but also supported the local education sector.

The proactive efforts of CRTG Peru have earned widespread praise and recognition from the local community. It has demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility of the staff and the group, bringing warmth and hope to the affected people in the disaster-stricken area.

CRTG contributes to the BRI by promoting local employment and entrepreneurship

CRTG Peru has actively participated in the BRI Youth Development Program. Leveraging its 12 ongoing projects, CRTG Peru focuses on youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and international communication, and devises the "Sino-Peruvian Youth Employment Empowerment Plan". The initiative mobilizes Chinese and Peruvian youth to participate in joint construction of the Belt and Road, nurturing internationally-oriented and multi-skilled young talents for the Belt and Road construction. Till now, CRTG Peru and its affiliated projects have provided internship and employment opportunities to nearly a thousand local youth.

Building Chinese parks together to sustain Sino-Peruvian friendship

The Chinese Park is situated in the Malecon Cisneros 11th block, between Parque Niño and Parque Itzhak Rabin of Miraflores district of Lima. It is a gift from the Peruvian Chinese community to celebrate Peru's bicentennial of independence and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Peru, as well as the 172nd anniversary of Chinese immigration to Peru. The park features typical Chinese garden elements such as pavilions, stone bridges, and stone lions, scattered amidst green grass and palm trees. From the pavilion, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the vast Pacific Ocean, particularly beautiful during sunset.

This Chinese park was initiated by the Peruvian Chinese Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Peruano Chino), the Miraflores district government, and the Chinese Embassy in Peru. CRTG, as the project management representative of the Peruvian Association of Chinese-funded Enterprises (the construction funding party), has participated in the preliminary preparation and construction process of the park. Leveraging its management expertise in construction and engineering, CRTG has facilitated the rapid completion of the park. As a significant symbol of the close ties and profound friendship between the two countries, the park not only embodies the sentiments of overseas Chinese longing for their homeland and patriotism but also serves as a shining stage for cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and Peru.
