As a "Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries", Macao Special Administrative Region serves as a bridge connecting China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (PSC) based on its institutional advantages of "one country, two systems" as well as the unique benefit of its own culture and language.
In 2003, the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries was launched in Macao. Over the past 20 years since it was established, trade in products between Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries has continued to grow rapidly. The overall situation, country and product distribution have revealed the following characteristics:
Relating to the overall situation, the merchandise trade between Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries is continuing to increase;
Regarding to the country distribution, it is mainly driven by the trade in goods with Portugal and Brazil;
Relating to the product distribution, the merchandise trade between Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries is mainly focused on imported food products.
The establishment of a Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries is an important initiative for Macao to leverage its strengths and serve the needs of the country. After years of development, Macao has essentially formed a comprehensive service platform centered around economic and trade co-operation services, with collaborative development and joint promotion in areas such as scientific research, traditional Chinese medicine, cultural tourism, exhibition and trade, finance, and youth entrepreneurship.
With the accelerated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin, it will be beneficial to deepen Macao's co-operation with Portuguese-speaking countries in various fields such as trade and investment. This will enrich the content of the China-PSC platform in Macao, its functions, and provide strong support for platform's growth and solidification.
