The first brain science industrial base in Central China was unveiled on Aug 12 in the national university science and technology park of the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC).

The brain is the most sophisticated part of the human body, responsible for all human activities, and brain science is not only a fundamental science of mankind, but also the most important science for understanding how people and nature operate.

The new industrial base will mainly focus on six areas, including brain imaging, brain diseases, brain-computer intelligence, and intelligent equipment manufacturing. Brain science is expected to become the next 100-billion-yuan ($14.83 billion) industry in the valley by attracting 1,000 upstream and downstream enterprises involved in brain science and forming a complete industrial chain.

The construction of the base will be divided into three phases, with the first phase having an area of about 10,000 square meters. The second phase involves a construction area of 130,000 sq m and will consist of office buildings, research centers, workshops and supporting service facilities. The third phase will create a development space of more than 500,000 sq m for leading brain science enterprises.
