With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Su embroidery from Suzhou city of Jiangsu province stands as the epitome of Chinese embroidery art, embodying the spirit, emotions and aesthetic pursuits of the Chinese people.

Recognized for its outstanding quality and continuous innovation, it has been a guiding force in fashion and serves as an exemplar of Chinese arts and crafts. In 2006, this ancient art form earned its place in the inaugural list of the country’s national intangible cultural heritage.

Throughout the development of Su embroidery art, extraordinary creativity has been evident in various historical periods. Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Su embroidery has expanded its presence onto a broader stage, closely aligning with the times. It has demonstrated robust vitality in serving socialist construction and the pursuit of a better life for the people.

The art has continually evolved, breaking through self-imposed boundaries, exhibiting an enduring artistic creativity, and giving rise to a new look characterized by inclusiveness, diversity and vibrant brilliance.

This exhibition, titled Su embroidery art exhibition: 1949—2019, showcases exquisite masterpieces spanning the 70-odd-year history since the founding of New China. These works, rich in theme, sophisticated in craftsmanship and diverse in style, not only demonstrate unparalleled artistic excellence, but also systematically illustrate the developmental journey of Su embroidery, continuously innovating in materials, techniques, themes and styles while inheriting its rich tradition.

The exhibition also features a collection of precious embroidery monographs, drafts and documented materials, offering a multi-dimensional presentation of the core techniques and artistic evolution of Su embroidery. It provides a vivid, comprehensive and in-depth portrayal of the beauty, spirit and innovative efforts of this artistic form.

Structured chronologically, the exhibition is divided into four sections which unfold the remarkable journey of Su embroidery art over the past 70-odd years, showcasing its achievements in classic inheritance, artistic exploration, craftsmanship innovation and communication and dissemination.

Beyond unraveling the artistic features and internal logic of Su embroidery, the presentation also highlights its integral connections with the economic, social and cultural development of China, reflecting the profound spiritual bond and shared emotions, values, ideals and spirit of the Chinese people.

The exhibition serves as an inspiration, urging individuals to further strengthen cultural awareness and confidence, and to safeguard and inherit Su embroidery as a precious traditional craft of the Chinese nation.
