Traditional lantern festivals and colored lanterns are ancient cultural customs in China. Generally, such large-scale lantern exhibitions are held by the governments from just before Lunar Spring Festival to Lantern Festival.

According to historical records, as early as the beginning of the Southern Dynasties (420-589), a Lantern Festival was held in Nanjing, the earliest record of the festival in Chinese history. These events were originally created to pray for good weather, family happiness and world peace. The sight of brightly lit decorations gradually spread from deep in the palaces to the streets and alleys of the common people.

The China National Arts and Crafts Museum, also known as the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, is located in the northern section of Beijing's central axis, within the core area of the Olympic Park. It is adjacent to public cultural facilities and institutions such as the Museum of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese Academy of History, the National Stadium, the China National Convention Center and the China Science and Technology Museum.

The China National Arts and Crafts Museum is a national level cultural and artistic hall in the fields of Chinese arts and crafts and intangible cultural heritage, and an important place for the protection and inheritance of human civilization.

Integrating functions such as collection, research, display, international exchange and public service, the museum has a significant geographical location, unique architectural style, advanced facilities and a collection of exquisite treasures. It represents the cultural image of the nation and the capital, showcasing the flourishing development of culture in the new era.

To celebrate the convening of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and welcome the new year, the museum has organized the Illuminated Rabbit Year 2023 New Year Colored Lantern Festival.

It enhances excellent traditional Chinese culture, enriches public cultural life during Spring Festival, and publicizes national and provincial intangible cultural heritage projects such as "colored lanterns and lantern festivals”.

This event gathers national, provincial, municipal and county-level intangible cultural heritage lantern projects from Beijing and provinces such as Shanxi, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Fujian and Anhui. Many inheritors have participated in the design and production, offering a variety of themes and rich, colorful displays. As New Year approaches, the museum illuminates the Year of the Rabbit, praying for national prosperity, good weather and the happiness and well-being of the people.
