The guqin, initially known as the qin or seven-stringed zither, also called lyuqi or sitong, is a traditional instrument that embodies the Chinese national spirit and aesthetics. As one of the "four arts" (qin, chess, calligraphy and painting), guqin art is essential for scholars' self-cultivation. Guqin music has a traceable history of over 3,000 years, the longest and most continuous history of Chinese instrumental forms.

As the epitome of Chinese instrumental art, the guqin encompasses qin making (shape and construction), strings, notation, players, compositions, history, songs, theories and schools, forming a comprehensive qin study system. The meanings in guqin music, including titles, tonal structures, non-equal rhythms, and ethereal sound quality, carry the core characteristics of traditional Chinese music, forming the essence of Chinese musical aesthetics. Guqin performance, merging player and music, reflects the ideal of Chinese humanistic spirit.

"Culture prospers with the nation, and cultural heritage connects with national heritage." In the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911), guqin art nearly faced extinction. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the country's economic development and social progress fostered cultural awareness, providing unprecedented space for guqin art.

In the 21st century, guqin art has been re-recognized as intangible cultural heritage. In 2003, the UNESCO listed guqin art as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity"; in 2006, it was included in China's first group of national intangible cultural heritage. In the new era, guqin art has become a successful example and is experiencing unprecedented prosperity. As an outstanding representative of Chinese culture, guqin art once again raises the cultural confidence of the Chinese nation, continuing to inherit and promote its elegant sounds.
